I was just curious if anyone could comment on the legality of tonfas in amtgard.
I haven't been able to find anything against them, but only found one case of them being used or made in Soul's Crossing. I'm just wanting to be absolutely positive before I start work on them.

This conversation comes up about once every 6 months, and people usually chime in with their opinion, however the actual answer is: There is nothing explicitly forbidding you from making tonfas. However, due to the complexity and added stresses of their particular method of fighting they are prone to being unsafe, and are likely to be ruled unsafe by a champion unless they are made exceedingly well.
About 6 years ago Midnight Sun had someone made tonfas that were ruled legal and used for over a year with no issues. However there have also been many many tries by people to make something similar that have broken on their first use, or not padded well enough, or just plain looked scary and were ruled illegal.

I'm pretty sure that it was not meant that the champion judged them unsafe due only to looks. They probably looked scary and were therefore looked at closer than usual.

Having someone decide something is illegal because it LOOKS illegal does not surprise me in the least. There was a local quals held not too terribly long ago and the judges deemed one of the swords that was entered as having an illegal pommel because it was too small. When it was measured at home after the fact--guess what? Yup... totally legal size.

It happens. Anywho, I'll likely make them after I get back from band camp, my other nerdy passion.

I used tonfa in Riverstone a long long time ago. I did pvc joint pieces with liquid cement. They had a tendency to break after a few weeks, but I heard ways the design could be improved. I might even still have one. I also later used the design to make claws, though the claws would tend to break as well, which would lead me to use them as tonfa later on...
