Sutra stood alone in the cool evening air. The loaded wagon occasionally creaked, whispering assurances that it would live up its owners expectations. He inhaled the air he had come to know and love. This was home. Closing his eyes, the delicate hint of burning mesquite filled his lungs. The familiar atmosphere coiled its way across his tongue and into his lungs.

He would treasure this moment.

The lone figure looked back to the task at hand and tightened the last strap securing the small collection of items he had procured over his lifetime here. He had never been so alone and yet he could sense her with him. Watching over him. Loving him.

With a sigh and a reminiscing smile, Sutra took one last look at the small structure he had built for himself a few seasons ago at the foothills of Hawk's Shadow Woods. He never imagined the small track of land would host a lively barony of good people. He would miss the Pass and her inhabitants.

The baron had held a gathering to celebrate the day of the dead, honoring those who had passed on to the beyond. He had missed saying goodbye to a handful of others who were unable to attend their humble feast. Sutra left knowing the small outpost would be in good hands. The Talrens had become integral to the shire's growth. He also thanked the gods for the brave souls who stood by his side from the very beginning. To the mysterious scout who presented himself as Shadowhawk. To the towering giant known as Eniad. And to the countless others who made this their home.

Through days of piercing cold and blistering heat, it was their hands that helped build the community he was now leaving.

His heart ached wishing his fate rested here, but Sutra knew better. He had heard and felt the music of his heart. This path would lead him there.

With a quick pull upwards, Sutra lifted himself into the padded seat and reached out for the harness. With a snap of leather straps, the wagon lurched forward. The earth crunched under the wooden wheels, metal supports moaned, wooden boards whined, horse shoes clapped. The wagon had come to life to keep its driver company.

The town slept well tonight. Blood and lives had been shed and sacrificed in a never ending struggle to stave off waves of the undead, hoards of goblins, and an untold number of other enemies determined to undermine the well being of the Pass and her residents.

The wagon exited through the western gate.

Familiar faces in the wooden guard tower looked solemnly on. Sutra had come to know every exile, vagabond, and misfit who had passed through these gates. He knew their names and their stories. He took them in and tried to give them a second chance when the world did not.

Sutra tried with every fiber of his being to be strong and wise. Time and pain had taken its toll on the dark soul, yet his humanity never left him. The guiding light of the seed spark made sure of it.

The Emerald Hills was vast. Sutra plotted his path well. It was the unknown he could not scrye beyond. His spirit leapt at the thought of what might come.

Today began the next chapter in his life.
